Why is dragon ball z so good

That right there is its biggest flaw, which is kind of funny as a lot of other big Shonen titles are guilty of this yet DBZ fans tend to get after those shows for this stuff while treating it as if it's not a big deal here. The manga's at least tolerable as the super sayajin transformations don't take forever. What made the original series better, imo, was that everyone had unique abilities, there was more emphasis on hand-to-hand combat and the longest fights ever went for was 3 episodes.

And I think what really gets to me about this, too, is that honestly, DBZ has some really good story lines and characters. I really like these characters.

However, it really says something when in an action show, my favorite episodes are the ones where there's no fighting and it's just the characters interacting. I actually found myself strangely wrapped up in the Great Saiyaman Saga because it actually moved at a good pace and gave us something different.

I love the romances in this one, too. Gohan and Videl are arguably the best couple in the series and Krillin and 18 are just precious. Even Bulma and Vegeta surprisingly make for a better couple than I remember. Piccolo is also a lot more interesting than he was in the first series. But again, you have to wait so long to get to all of this stuff.

And that's why I don't consider this one of the greatest anime titles of all time. It is good, better than I remember it being to be honest, but I still question so many people calling this their, ahem, 'go-to action series'. This title contains: Positive role models. But I would not recommend it to kids unless if you watch the edit version.

Now if you watched the American TV version of Dragon Ball z kai, "which is where most of the gore, swearing, sexual themes " is dramatically cut down. This title contains: Positive Messages. Adult Written by Zsolti-kun August 25, The Dragon Ball Z is sci-fi horror anime for young adults, so this is not recommended for children. This has birthed three sequels to this series with each being more flawed in the eyes of some fans than the last. However, while these sequels are flawed there is no doubt that the original continuation that originally wasn't even its own thing in the manga of Dragon Ball is the most popular of all the series. That continuation is Dragon Ball Z and this list will be looking at why exactly so many consider it the best of the series and why many still think the original story is better.

One thing that came from Dragon Ball Z that she series is so well known for is the countless ridiculous transformations that the series introduced. This new form of power scaling was one of the most influential concepts in the world of shonen anime and manga and it has been only gaining more steam as the series continues. This concept is something that fans come back for every time a sequel comes out and these sequels have definitely delivered on more ridiculous and more powerful forms each time they show up.

While the transformation concept of Dragon Ball Z may be popular that doesn't mean that it's flawless or even a particularly good concept. In fact, it is a piece of Dragon Ball lore that actually turned away many fans of the original. This is one of the concepts that brought in the horrible form of power scaling that it pioneered. Dragon Ball is more about character growth and mastery of their skill instead of who is reaching what form next.

Dragon Ball Z just focuses on this concept a bit too much to symbolize a new limit being reached. Dragon Ball Z is the series that took Dragon Ball to the next level. In Dragon Ball things are relatively low-key is in, the story takes place completely on Earth and with Earthlings and a few demons at the forefront. It is mostly based on a lot of Japanese mythology with some Chinese influence added on. In this sequel, fans are taken from Earth to other planets, other dimensions, and even the afterlife where even more alien, demonic, and other otherworldly beings are introduced.

While that gigantic worldbuilding may be appealing to some there was something about the original Dragon Ball series's more down to Earth level of action that was a lot better. While Dragon Ball Z wrapped its original Japanese television run in , the series has been distributed, syndicated, and rebooted into infinity.

All is now right with the world, I suppose. Given Dragon Ball Z 's massive and sustaining popularity, I'm eager to be disabused of my grudge against the series, which is, in my estimation, the most overrated anime of all time. My fellow Complex staff writer Gregory Babcock , a lifelong Dragon Ball fan, will persuade me otherwise, once and for all. What is Dragon Ball all about? Bad guy comes to town. Good guys fight bad guy. Bad guy counterattacks. Good guys counterattack and win. Rinse, repeat.

Dragon Ball Z which debuted in Japan in essentially founded and popularized this sort of series. Manga artist Akira Toriyama is the creative force behind Dragon Ball. In Dragon Ball Z , a lot of what the characters are doing is stylized martial arts. None of the fight choreography is clever. Whereas Dragon Ball Z is just an onslaught of beams and volume. Dragon Ball Z builds its characters through its fighting.

Instead of having a scene where people are bonding, walking, traveling, sharing a meal, a lot of the character development in Dragon Ball Z is drawn out through combat: character development through beating each other up and training, character development through staring down your enemy and monologging. We watch Goku train in the hyperbolic time chamber with Gohan , and we watch Vegeta do the same thing with Trunks.

In lieu of emotional scenes where characters develop in more true-to-life settings, every episode features some form of combat.

Teenage boys want fighting and girls. Dragon Ball Z is about grown, brollic men getting more brollic , getting more powered up, and revealing the struggle to become stronger. But when you were a kid watching this, did the action resonate with you as spectacular violence, or did the action resonate as strong character drama? I understand why the action is fun to watch.

But do the characters resonate with you? The character structure is very simplified, but Vegeta is trying to constantly surpass his rival. You can play Pokemon and have that problem, or you can read Shakespeare and have that problem.
