Hmm, the next best thing I can suggest is consulting with a regular vet or contacting someone at a local zoo who specializes in exotic birds. I hope your little guy is ok. Keep me updated! My cockatiel sleeps most of the time in the day and he is really fluffed up too.
And i can see he also looses his feathers sometimes he also eats his poop. Is he molting?? My 6 month old has become real cranky and trying to bite lately. Is she molting. We take her out of the cage daily and handle her, but this behavior has just started. I have noticed the fluffy feather from the front of the bird around the house and a few small ones from her tail.
Is this molting? My cockatiel is only 3 and a half months old. Hello, I just bought a beautiful, pied, hand-fed supposedly cockatiel from our local Petco.
The little thing won't come out of the corner o its birdcage and threatens to bite me when I come near. Also, it has not eaten since I brought it home. Is this normal behavior for a hand-fed baby. Please help! Just talk to him and let him observe you until he gets used to you. Keep a soft, soothing voice around him. He'll be very good in a while. Maybe your bird needs time to adjust to it's new surroundings, mine was the same at first.
Eventually I got him a friend as I was sorry for him, it was the smartest thing I ever did. Sometimes the birds in bigger pet sites are there a while mine was there for 3 months before we got her. She never was taken out unless to clean the cage so we waited for her to come to us. She was very clumsy at 1st but now loves us. Also, my little bird is quite small. Is that an indicator of age? I owned a cockatiel previously for eight years; however, I have not had one for over ten years.
I think I just need a refresher course Cockatiels grow to full size pretty young and can be anywhere from about grams. Probably only by behavior or blood test. If the bird sings and whistles, it's a male. If the bird is pretty quiet, its a female.
Hello Ashley, I am a first time bird owner. I've been doing a lot of reading on cockatiels what to do what not to do and what not. I really need some help though.
My cockatiel adapted very well to my home because she already knew and trusted me because i visited her a lot in the pet store until i knew we were perfect for each other. We haven't quite gotten to the petting part she doesn't really like to be touched unless with with your cheek.

Thank you Salim Patel. I've had my bird for a few months now. But it's feathers never really came out. It looks like it's molting but it's been that way for months now. We had it since it was a baby. What can I do to help her grow her feathers? Hi, I am a new owner. These feathers are believed to have both a protective as well as a sensory function which can detect air movement.
Other bristle like feathers which are found close to the follicle of contour feathers are called filoplumes. They respond to pressure when flying and they can be found on all feathers with the exception of wing and tail flight feathers. Down feathers are small, light and fluffy and they form an undercoat beneath covert feathers which insulates a bird's body by trapping air in-between feathers and skin.
Semiplumes are another type of small insulating feather. The shaft of a semiplume is soft and flexible. Birds also have small powder down feathers, which grow continuously. Instead of being molted out, powder down feathers disintegrate when a bird preens, forming a white powder made out of keratin that conditions and waterproofs feathers.
Cockatiels produce an excessive amount of powder compared to other species. You'll find white powder inside of the cage and on objects near the cage. If you pet your bird with your chin or cheek, you may even get a light coating of white powder on your skin. Preening Preening is how a bird cleans, waterproofs and conditions feathers for skin protection, warmth and flight.
Most birds have a uropygial or preening gland and it is located on a bird's back near the base of the tail. The preening gland secretes an oil like substance through multiple ducts. A cluster of small down feathers surround the ducts and act like a wick, holding the secreted oil. By wiping their beaks on the wick, birds are able to use the oil to clean, lubricate, condition and groom individual feathers daily.
Birds will also remove pieces of dry skin and loose keratin from the shafts of new feathers that are growing in when preening as well. They will also preen their feet, removing dry skin, food or droppings that they may have stepped into.
In addition to grooming, preening serves another vital function. The oil used for preening contains precursors to vitamin D that are activated when exposed to direct sunlight or full spectrum lighting that contains both UVA and UVB lighting. Vitamin D is ingested while preening and vitamin D is needed for the absorption of calcium in a bird's diet. Yep, my boys are molting like crazy. Monica Cruising the avenue Avenue Veteran. Combines two of my old vacuums into one, only better! Cockatiel molting happens to help the bird shed out old feathers and grow new fresh feathers.
This short YouTube video gives you a heads-up about what to expect when your cockatiel starts molting. The owner talks you through the tell-tale signs like falling feathers that can seem so numerous they are like a snowfall!
As Cockatiel Cottage points out, adult cockatiels can have more than 3, feathers on their body at any given moment. Feathers are made of a protein called keratin.
This protein is used to make all different shapes and sizes of feathers that have lots of different purposes and functions. Cockatiels spend a great amount of time everyday grooming and maintaining their feathers.
This is called preening. Your bird will use their beak and sometimes their feet to clean and smooth their feathers. VCA Animal Hospitals explains that molting is a normal occurrence in all birds.
Birds need to make sure their feathers are healthy and undamaged to do their job well. Simple daily life can cause the feathers to become worn out as the bird moves about, foraging for food, caring for the young, migrating, or competing for mates. Feathers that have become old or damaged then need to be shed or molted out.
After the old feather falls out, a new feather will grow in its place.
