Take alternative rock for example, it is basically alternative rock plus alternative country, alternative country plus alternative folk, alternative folk plus folk rock, etc.
You could look at alternative country as an alternative to alternative rock, and alternative folk as an alternative to alternative folk. There have been many rock songs that have had a positive influence on alternative music. However, I do believe that most of them should not be called alternative music.
